On Tuesday night (May 14, 2024), Ronel Blanco, who threw the seventeenth no-hitter in franchise history for the Astros on April 1, 2024 vs the Toronto Blue Jays was ejected after umpires found a sticky substance in his glove. As a result, Blanco received a 10-game suspension from MLB’s senior vice president of on-field operations, Michael Hill.
Houston Astros RHP Ronel Blanco was ejected by umpires in the 3rd inning of Houston’s game versus the Oakland A’s at Minute Maid Park in Houston on Tuesday. Blanco told umpires and the media that he never used sticky substances and believes the sticky substance the umpire felt was a combination of the rosin he put on his left arm and sweat. However, even if the stickiness was caused by the rosin and sweat, it is also illegal for pitchers to put rosin on their no-throwing arm/hand. So, no matter if the stickiness was a sticky substance or a combination of rosin & sweat, Blanco still broke MLB rules.
Blanco, who received a 10-game suspension from MLB on Wednesday, May 15th will be eligible to return on May 26 when Houston travels to face the Oakland Athletics. With Houston having a six-man rotation at the time of his suspension, Blanco will probably only miss one start during the time of his suspension.
Both Ronel Blanco & the Houston Astros will probably face some contradiction with fans, as if they haven’t been hated by a majority of the league & fans in recent history. As mentioned in the title, the Houston Astros seem to be cheating, seven years after their 2017 World Series cheating scandal. In 2017, the Houston Astros were involved in a sign-stealing cheating scandal where they used cameras to steal signs from the other team to know what pitch the opposing pitcher would throw next. Then, a member of the Astros would bang on a trash can a certain amount of times to communicate to the batter what pitch to expect.
In summary, Houston Astros RHP Ronel Blanco, who threw a no-hitter this season was ejected from Tuesday nights game as a result of umpires finding a sticky substance in his glove. Blanco said he never used a sticky substance & he believes that the umpire felt a combination of the rosin he put on his left arm and sweat. Nevertheless, both using sticky substances & putting rosin on your non-throwing arm is illegal in the MLB. As a result, Blanco received a 10-game suspension from Major League Baseball on Wednesday.
