During the 2023 MLB season, Mookie Betts started regularly playing second base as a result of Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux being injured and out for the whole season. Before Spring Training 2024 started, Dodgers Manager, Dave Roberts announced that Betts would make a complete position change to second base from right field. This would make the Dodgers’s middle infield feature Gavin Lux (back from injury) at shortstop and Mookie Betts at second base. However, as Spring Training ‘24 has started, Lux’s defense has not been good. As a result, on March 8, 2024, Dave Roberts announced that Mookie Betts would become LA’s “permanent” shortstop with Lux moving to second base.
Mookie Betts is an outstanding defensive player and this move will most likely make this Dodgers super team even better on the defensive side of the ball. Don’t be surprised if Betts wins a Gold Glove or two at shortstop sometime in his career.
