After 27 years of Phillies fan enjoying $1 Hot Dogs at Citizens Bank Park & Veterans Stadium, the Phillies have officially discontinued Dollar Dog Night in Philly. According to The Liberty Line, the Phillies hosted a Dollar Dog Night on April 25, 2023, their second of the 2023 MLB season. The Liberty Line’s Article from April 26, 2023 states that the Phillies sold over 50,000 hot dogs that night alone. To put that in perceptive, according to SoFi, the average American citizen makes $56,000/year. Selling over 50,000 hot dogs, plus taxes means the Phillies made over $50,000 that night on hot dogs alone. In summary, the Phillies made more money one night alone on hot dogs than the average American citizen makes in one year. yes, I understand this is professional sports and pro sports has a ridiculous amount of money involved but still.
However, the City of Brotherly Love is known for having some rowdy fans and this doesn’t exclude some Phillies fans. There was a man attending the Phillies game on Dollar Dog Night in 2023 that decided to try to eat as many hot dogs as possible. This news spread like wild fire and fans in his section quickly started buying hot dogs just to throw towards the man so he could eat more and more hot dogs. As figured, this caused an issue in that section of CBP. However, this was not as big as a problem as the next thing I’m going to talk about.
Now, fans of team have been known to throw items onto the playing surface such as Buffalo Bills fans throwing snowballs onto the field. The Phillies started their 2023 season with a shaky start and did not play very well on Dollar Dog Night 2023 against the Seattle Mariners, loosing the game 5-3. Phillies fans were pretty upset about the team’s performance that night so, in return, fans of Philly baseball started throwing hot dogs onto the field, causing the umpires to delay the game. Now, there was nothing that came out about fans being removed from the stadium by security but I wouldn’t doubt if it happened.
After the Phillies removed Dollar Dog Night, they released its replacement, BOGO Hatfield Hot Dog Night. On BOGO (Buy One, Get One) Night, fans will be able to buy one hot dog for its regular price, $5 and receive one free hot dog in exchange.
