Travis Bazzana Makes History at 2024 MLB Draft
Travis Bazzana, a Sydney, Australia native just made history on July 14, 2024 in Fort Worth, Texas. Bazzana, a skilled hitter who played collegiate baseball for the Oregon State Beavers became the first second baseman to be drafted first overall in MLB history as well as becoming the first ever Australian to be drafted with the top pick in the draft.
Before being drafted first overall by Cleveland this year, Bazzana played in the Australian Baseball League, in the NCAA, Cap Cod League, & the West Coast League. At 15 years old in 2018, Travis Bazzana joined the Sydney Blue Sox of the AUBL. Bazzana would end up playing 3 seasons in the Australian Baseball League with Sydney until he came to the United States after the 2021 AUBL season. To start his baseball career in the United States, Bazzana played for the Corvallis Knights in Corvallis, Oregon of the West Coast League, a summer collegiate league. In the summer of 2021, Bazzana hit .429/.471/.593 with the Knights, showing he was definitely ready to play for the nationally ranked Oregon State Beavers. In his first season with Oregon State, Bazzana hit .306/.425/.478 and helped the No. 3 ranked Beavers make their way to the playoffs. The next year, in his Sophomore season, the Aussie hit .374/.500/.622 and yet again helped OSU get to the playoffs. In his third and final season with the Beavers, Bazzana hit . 407/.568/.911 with 28 home runs in 214 at bats to cap off an amazing college career.
Whether Bazzana ends up in the Big Leagues as a second baseman, an outfielder, or another position, his bat will surely shine as he represents the entire country of Australia.
