Is This The 1st Move Towards a World Series Championship?
Mets Make a Trade | Why This is Just The Start For Steve Cohen
Jose Siri isn’t going to be playing his home games in a Minor League stadium in 2025 anymore. The newly acquired outfielder will instead be playing on one of the biggest playoff contenders in the league.
Steve Cohen has made his first notable move of the offseason, trading for veteran outfielder Jose Siri. In this deal, the New York Mets received outfielder Jose Siri from the Rays in exchange for reliever Eric Orze. For New York, this may be the beginning to a huge offseason while for Tampa Bay, this is yet another move in their rebuild.
Siri hit .187/.255/.366 with 18 homeruns and 47 RBIs for the Rays this past season. On the defensive side of the game, Siri will join an outfield consisting of Starling Narte, Brandon Nimmo, & Tyrone Taylor. Since former Met Harrison Bader is a free agent, Siri is also most likely the Mets’ replacement for Bader.
Orze made his MLB Debut in July and went 0-1 with a 21.60 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP in his 2 appearances & 1.2 IP for Tampa Bay the rest of the season.
This trade is destined to be the first move of a huge offseason for the Mets. They are pursuing Juan Soto, who's contract could be worth up to $700M, and owner Steve Cohen has made it known that he is going to outbid every single team when it comes to the Soto deal negotiations. On addition, the Mets are seen as a favorite to sign one of the top free agents available besides Soto, Corbin Burnes, who's contract is expected to be around $250 Million. Then there's longtime Mets’ star, Pete Alonso, who is also a free agent. Alonso might very well be another free agent the Mets sign.
Whether or not Steve Cohen and the New York Mets succeed in signing all of these big free agents, their trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for Jose Siri is the beginning of a huge offseason.
