“With the first pick of the 2022 MLB draft, the Baltimore Orioles select Jackson Holliday, a shortstop from Stillwater High School, in Stillwater, Oklahoma.” These words spoken by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred changed the history of the Baltimore Orioles & Major League Baseball forever.
Son of former MLB All-Star, Matt Holliday, Jackson Holliday first made his mark in baseball when he had one of the best high school baseball seasons ever. According to MLB.com, in his senior season in 2022, Holliday hit .685/.749/1.392 (89-for-130) with 29 doubles, six triples, 17 home runs, 74 runs scored, 79 RBI & 30 stolen bases in 40 games. With all these great stats, why wouldn’t the Orioles pick Jackson Holliday at number 1 overall?
Holliday then played for remainder of the 2022 Minor League Baseball (MiLB) season and the whole 2023 MiLB season. Going into the 2024 MLB season, many believed Holliday would be on the Orioles’ Opening Day roster. However, Holliday was optioned to AAA Norfolk Tides to work on playing second base and hitting off of left-handed pitchers. It didn’t take Holliday long at all though, finally being called up and making his MLB Debut on April 10, 2024- 10 games into the 2024 season. In the Minor Leagues, Holliday hit .321/.451/.948 for all 5 minor league levels.
On April 10, 2024, Jackson Holliday was called up from Triple A to play in the Orioles game vs the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Holliday started at second base and batted ninth for the O’s in their 7-5 comeback win over Boston. While batting in the game, Holliday went 0-4 with his first career RBI, helping lead the Orioles to their victory.
After finally being called up from AAA, former first overall pick & son of former MLB All-Star, Matt Holliday, shortstop Jackson Holliday made his MLB debut in the Orioles’ 7-5 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on April 10, 2024. The Jackson Holliday Era has officially begun in Birdland.
