MLB Releases Official BP Hats
Major League Baseball Releases Each Team's BP Hat & a New Alt Road Hat
You know that baseball is just around the corner— free agents are signing left and right, pitchers/catcher report in less than 2 weeks, & Major League Baseball has released the batting practice hats for the upcoming season.
With BP hats being a huge success last year, MLB decided to run it back, along with the special grey hats.
As mentioned before, last year’s batting practice hats were so successful that Major League Baseball & New Era decided to keep each team’s hat from last year.
Since every hat is a duplicate, we are not going to go as deep into looking at the hats, however, we will review the top hats in the collection.
Houston Astros
Houston’s BP hats combine the present aspect of design in baseball with a classic throwback— the Tequila Sunsrise design. This unique design features something baseball had never seen before— a unique design that revolutionized the design of the game. Unfortunately, Houston only wore these uniforms full-time from 1975-1986, and they occasionally bring them back for special occasions.
Luckily, last year and now this year, players will don the sunset design before games. This design features the sunset design of red, orange, and yellow horizontal lines on the front of the hat along with the Astros’ circle logo. The bill & back of the hat are all nay blue, which really ties together the hat with the Astros’ colors.

Pittsburgh Pirates
Much like the Houston Astros, the Pittsburgh Pirates also paid tribute to their history with a throwback look. These hats are the Stargell Stars— which was done by the Pirates from 1978 until 1982. These yellow embroidered stars, which were given to teammates who had a good performance by Hall of Famer & Pirates legend Willie Stargell, now return as a design on the front of the cap.
Much like most Pirates’ hats, the hat is black with the yellow P on the front. However, this hat features 3 yellow lines running horizontal across the front of the hat to symbolize the design of the Buccos’ hats from the ‘70s & ‘80s. In between those lines, are 2 stars on each side of the P, with 2 rows of the double-stars, giving us a total of 8 stars on the cap.
These hats bring back an iconic design in Pirates’ history, which Pittsburgh tried to bring back on a full-time basis in 2013— giving players stars for great plays and performances. However, MLB declined the request to bring back these amazing hats. Now, Pirates’ players can wear this part of history during batting practice before every game.

Philadelphia Phillies
Introduced in 1978, the Phillie Phanatic is one of the best mascots in sports and he is also one of the things fans love the most about the team. The city of Philadelphia is known for their loyal fans, and Philly sports teams will do anything for their fans. As a result, the Phillies went with a modern design for their BP hats, a hat featuring their mascot.
In addition to MLB announcing the standard BP hats, New Era also released a brand new BP hat for each team— a grey version. The hats feature a very similar design to the Phillies’ home alternate cap, with a blue base & a red bill. However, rather than the Phillies’ P logo, this cap features a graphic of the Phillie Phanatic’s head!
Like last year, the Phillies will likely wear this cap for the Phanatic’s Birthday on April 20th vs the Miami Marlins.
Grey BP Hats
This year, MLB also added a second version of each team’s BP hat, which features the same design expect with grey as the main color and with most hats only featuring 1 team color on the cap. Teams will likely wear these hats while they are on the road during batting practice, and MLB might have only done this to be able to sell “New For 2025” BP hats
Love the Stargell Stars hat for the Pirates. And I love the old Devil Rays cap for TB. Thanks!
