We have seen many very “lopsided” trades in MLB history including the Chicago White Sox trading Fernando Tatis Jr & Erik Johnson to the San Diego Padres for James Shields (retired 2 years later) and cash, plus the Dodgers trading Oneil Cruz & Angel German to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Tony Watson, who is already out of baseball. Today, we will be exploring some crazy trade predictions before the 2024 MLB trade deadline.
Willy Adames to LA
Although this trade has been proposed before, Willy Adames seems to be very likely to be traded to any team, including the Los Angeles Dodgers this off-season. Even with Mookie Betts moving to shortstop this season, Gavin Lux has not played well this season and could be traded to Milwaukee. Adames, 28 is a career .249/.322/.441 hitter and hit .217 in 2023. Other players that could be included in this trade are Gavin Lux (SS/2B) & Jackson Ferris (LHP), LA’s #7 prospect .
Trade: LAD Gets: SS Willy Adames | MIL Gets: SS/2B Gavin Lux & LHP Jackson Ferris
Alonso to the Windy City
Although making the playoffs in 2022, the New York Mets went 75-87 in 2023. Looking to rebuild, one of New York’s best players, Pete Alonso is entering the last year of his contract in 2024. Alonso, who is considered one of the best first basemen in Major League Baseball hit .217/.318/.822 in 2023 and is a career .251/.342/.869 hitter. Alonso, known for his bat, led the National League in homers in his rookie season of 2019 as well as winning back to back Home-run Derbies in 2020 & 2021. As of April 2024, the Chicago Cubs have three first basemen on their roster- Michael Busch, Cody Bellinger, & prospect Matt Mervis. However, Cody Bellinger’s main position is outfield and both Busch & Mervis are still young prospects who can play other positions. After DFAing veteran first baseman Garret Cooper, Chicago could be looking for an every day first baseman. Pete Alonso would be a great option for Chicago as he could also fill the designated hitter spot to let one of the other players get some time at first. In addition, either Bellinger, Busch, or Mervis could play first to give Alonso an off-day. Along with Alonso, Chicago could be looking for a pitching prospect while possibly sending over a first basemen and a pitcher.
Trade: CHC Gets: 1B Pete Alonso, LHP Nate Lavender (#24) | NYM Gets: OF Owen Cassie (#3), 1B Matt Mervis (#13), & LHP Jordan Wicks
Closer From Brew Crew to Philly
After letting Craig Kimbrel walk in free agency, the Philadelphia Phillies are without a closer. However, the Milwaukee Brewers have one of the best closers in baseball and Philadelphia may be looking to trade for him. the 2020 NL Rookie of the Year, 2020 NL Reliver of the Year, & a 2x All-Star Philadelphia could definitely be interested in Williams- but what will it take in return. It is possible that Philly could send their #11 prospect, Griff McGarry who can pitch in both the bullpen and rotation along with Philadelphia’s #24 prospect, Samuel Aldegheri, a starter.
Trade: PHI gets: RHP Devin Williams | MIL Gets: RHP Griff McGarry (#11) & LHP Samuel Aldegheri (#24)
These exact trades are very unlikely to happen however, don’t be surprised if the Dodgers go after Willy Adames, the Cubs trade for Pete Alonso, or the Phillies aquire Devin Williams from the Brewers. Along with most MLB trade deadlines, the 2024 MLB trade deadline is certain to be interesting.
