Cincinnati Reds fans had a lot to look forward to for the 2024 MLB season. A ton of Cincy’s top prospects would be up in the big leagues including, Elly De La Cruz, Spencer Steer, Matt McLain, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, & Noelvi Marte. However, the Reds #1 Prospect will not be playing for them for a while. Third basemen/shortstop Noelvi Marte recently failed MLB PED Test, saying he has taken Performance Enhancing Drugs. As a result of taking steroids, Marte has been suspended from playing for 80 games and will not be payed during this period.
As many of you know, there have been many great MLB players that have been accused of taking PEDs including Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, & most notably, Barry Bonds. After being accused of taking steroids, it is extremely rare for the player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Even though we barely saw any of Marte’s potential at the major league level, he still could have a tremendous career but not be inducted to the Hall of Fame.
The most recent player who failed MLB’s PED test was Fernando Tatis Jr., who failed the test in 2022. Tatis returned to playing for the Padres in 2023 but was hated across the league. At basically every single stadium, including PETCO Park, home of the Padres, Tatis was booed and called many things. When Tatis Jr. would come up to bat or take the field, fans would boo him and call him names such as “cheater” and yelling at the pitcher to hit him.
Out of my personal experience, I went to an MLB game where the Padres were the visiting team. Every time Tatis came up to bat, he was booed and called names. Fans were even yelling, “HIT HIM!” and believe it or not, the next pitch, Tatis Jr. got hit by a pitch and went to first base. The funniest part of this whole thing was however, that once he got hit, almost all the fans started cheering, as if the home team had hit a homerun. Trust me, even I was booing Tatis and cheering when he got hit.
Just like almost everyone hates the Houston Astros after they cheated in 2017, players become hated. I don’t blame people for hating on players who failed the PED test. Taking steroids to play better is just wrong. In my opinion, the only right way to get better is to work hard, not by taking PEDs.
In conclusion, the Cincinnati Reds’s number one prospect, Noelvi Marte, recently failed MLB’s PED test and has been suspended 80 games without pay. With this, Marte’s whole baseball career may have been ruined and he will definitely be hated by many fans for the rest of his career.
