The No. 1 Overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been impressive so far in his big leagues career. According to MLB Network, Skenes is the No. 2 Overall Prospect in both Major League Baseball & Minor League baseball.
After being drafted in July 2023, Skenes pitched for the Florida Complex League Pirates (FCL), Bradenton Marauders (A), & the Altoona Curve (AA). According to milb.com, the 21 year-old posted a 5.40 ERA over 6.1 innings. Even though this isn’t a very good ERA, according to LSU Sports, Skenes had a collegiate career ERA of 2.18, including a 1.69 ERA in the 2022-2023 season. Also in this 2022-2023 College Baseball season, Skenes was a D1 College Baseball nation Champion, the 2023 Dick Howser Trophy Winner, the 2023 National Player of the Year (D1 baseball), the 2023 National Pitcher of the Year (College Baseball Foundation), a 2023 Consensus First-Team All-American, the 2023 College World Series Most Outstanding Player, apart of the 2023 NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team, the 2023 SEC Pitcher of the Year, 2023 First-Team All-SEC member, a SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll winner, the 2023 LSWA Louisiana Pitcher of the Year, & a seven-time College Baseball National Player of the Week. Just remember, these were just Skenes’s Award for his only season pitching at LSU, 2023.
On Leap Day, Feb. 29, 2024, the Pittsburgh Pirates faced off against the Baltimore Orioles during a Spring Training match-up in Sarasota, Florida. Skenes started on the bump for Pittsburgh and during his performance, Skenes throw a 102 mile per hour pitch.
102-mph is fast for a 21-year starting pitcher and shows a lot of potential. According to MLB Network, Skenes’s MLB ETA is during the 2024 season and Pittsburgh could use some starting pitching help. Don’t be suprised if you see Paul Skenes on the bump at PNC Park sometime during the 2024 season.
