Teoscar Hernandez Wins The Derby
A recap of the 2024 T-Mobile Home Run Derby in Arlington
The Los Angeles Dodgers have had some of the best players in all of MLB history throughout their franchise history. Just look that this list— Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Vin Scully, Duke Snider, Tommy Lasorda, Clayton Kershaw, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, & one player who many consider the best baseball player of all time, Shohei Ohtani. However, it wasn’t until Monday night when the Dodgers had the winner of the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on their roster. Along with Pete Alonso, Adolis Garcia, Alec Bohm, Gunnar Henderson, Bobby Witt Jr., Jose Ramirez, & Marcell Ozuna, Teoscar Hernandez participated in this year’s home run derby, which showcased Major League Baseball’s brand new derby rules.
After hitting 19 home runs in the first round of the derby, Teoscar advanced to the semifinals to face the #1 seed, Alec Bohm who launched 21 balls into the stands in round one. In the semifinals, Teoscar and Bohm ended up tied with 14 home runs to force a swing-off. In the swing-off, Hernandez went 2/3 while Bohm went 1/3, giving Teoscar the win and sending him to the championship of the T-Mobile Home Run Derby where he would face Royals’ young superstar & Texas native, Bobby Witt Jr. for a chance to be crowned the derby champion. With Teoscar Hernandez going first, he hit 14 balls in the seats of Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, home of the 2024 MLB All-Star week. Witt Jr. then came up to the plate needing 15 home runs to be named the winner of the 2024 derby. After hitting 14 home runs in the championship round, Witt had a few seconds, only enough time for one more swing until his two minute time limit ran out to tie Hernandez. As the time ran out, “Junior” ‘s last swing launched a ball to deep left-center field of Globe Life Field. However, the wing that determined the 2024 T-Mobile Home Run Derby ended with the ball hitting off of the top of the wall, giving Teoscar Hernandez the derby win and making Hernandez the first Dodger in franchise history to win the Home Run Derby.
