With the first major trade of the trade deadline this year taking place last night, trades seem to be piling on top of each other with the Phillies & Orioles, Dodgers & Red Sox, & the Orioles again making a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Phillies - Orioles Trade
The Philadelphia Phillies & Baltimore Orioles are two teams that have been picked by many experts like Ben Verlander and fans, along with myself, the writer and operator of Cleanup Sports News, speaking of me, it would mean a lot to me if you subscribed to Cleanup Sports to help support my work. While Philadelphia sits atop the National League as well as Baltimore being on top of the American League, these teams just made a deal that they both think can help them in their push for a World Series Championship.
On July 26, 2024, Phillies POBO Dave Dombrowski made a deal with Mike Elias to send OF Austin Hays to the City of Brotherly Love in exchange for relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez and OF Cristian Pache. Hays, an All-Star in 2023 has hit .255/.316/.711 this season with only 3 home runs. However, the Phillies plan to have Hays platoon in left field with Brandon Marsh depending on the opposition’s starting pitcher. For Hays, Philly sent Baltimore RHP Seranthony Dominguez who Philadelphia signed as an international free agent in 2011 & Cristian Pache who Philly got from the Athletics in a 2022 trade. In the trade, Baltimore was looking for a bullpen arm that was ready for the big leagues and while Dominguez has not had a good season so far this year, Birdland hopes he can turn his season around and do his job. This season, Seranthony has gone 3-2 with a 4.75 ERA along with a 1.22 WHIP in 36.0 innings. Pache, who was used as a bench option for Philly will probably be in the same role in B-More and has hit .202/.288/.557 with 0 home runs, 9 RBI, & 0 stolen bases.
Dodgers - Red Sox Trade
After designating LHP James Paxton for assignment on July 22, the star studded Los Angeles Dodgers traded Paxton to his former team, the Boston Red Sox on July 26 in exchange for 17 year old prospect, Moises Bolivar. In 18 starts with the Dodgers, Paxton went 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA & a 1.46 WHIP. Bolivar hit .270/.364/.787 with the Dominican Summer League Red Sox Blue Team.
Orioles - Rays Trade
In addition to the trade with the Phillies where they received RHP Seranthony Dominguez & OF Cristian Pache, the Orioles just made another trade in which they received starting pitcher Zach Eflin. In the trade with Tampa Bay, the O’s received the Rays’s Opening Day starter, RHP Zach Eflin while Tampa Bay received prospects OF Matthew Etzel, RHP Jackson Baumeister (Orioles No. 17 Prospect), & INF Mac Horvath (Orioles No. 10 Prospect). This season with Tampa bay, Eflin went 5-7 with a 4.09 ERA & a 1.16 WHIP in 19 starts. Although Eflin has not pitched as well as in prior years, this trade should definitely help out the Orioles in their push to a World Series ring as their starting rotation has been effected by injuries with Kyle Bradish, Tyler Wells, & John Means all undergoing season ending Tommy John Surgery.
