MLB Brings Back Players’ Weekend
In 2017, Major League Baseball introduced a weekend in August that was created to appreciate the players of Major League Baseball and give them three games to have fun. Previously, players were allowed to use custom bats, custom cleats, choose their name on the back of their jersey, & special uniforms were worn. However, in 2020, MLB decided to remove Players’ Weekend from the league schedule and Players’ Weekend seemed to be forgotten. That was until April 25, 2024, when Major League Baseball announced that Players’ Weekend would return in 2024- with a twist. Starting on August 16th and ending on August 18th, 2024, players will be allowed to wear special custom cleats, use custom bats, & get to be themselves on the field. Unlike before, players will not get to customize the name on their jersey & uniforms will be the same, except the hat. According to MLB, Friday, August, 16th will be known as Fun Friday, Saturday will focus on causes, & Sunday will be for the players to appreciate others. Below are the descriptions of each day’s theme according to MLB.com.
Fun (Friday, Aug. 16): Fun aspects of players’ personalities, friendships and off-field interests will be featured.
Causes (Saturday, Aug. 17): Focus will be on charitable and community initiatives that are important to players.
Appreciation (Sunday, Aug. 18): Players will celebrate the people who helped them on their path to the Major Leagues.
